DENTAL EXAMS AND CLEANINGS
Prevent problems before they start.
According to the American Dental Association, regular dental visits can spot health problems earlier and likely lead to simpler and more affordable solutions. Some diseases and medical conditions have symptoms that appear in the mouth. Discovering those symptoms early can lead to an effective treatment plan that benefits your health as a whole.
When you routinely see your dentist for cleanings, you can:

-
Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath .
-
Reduce staining from foods and beverages that can affect your smile.
-
Prevent costly dental treatments by catching problems early.
EXAMS
Your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and surrounding tissues to look for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and other health concerns. During the exam, your dentist may require that x-rays be taken to see what is happening behind the gums and bone. At Southdale Dental Associates, we use low-radiation, digital x-rays, to protect the patient and to create high-quality images for diagnosis.
CLEANING
Your dental hygienist will start the appointment by reviewing your health history and taking x-rays if needed. They will also take a measurement of the gums to look for any signs of gingivitis or bone loss around your teeth.
During the cleaning your hygienist will remove any buildup from your teeth using a variety of instruments. Once your teeth are clean, they will floss and polish them. Some patients choose to then have fluoride added to their teeth to increase their strength.
Cleanings are usually a comfortable experience, but if you are nervous about your cleaning, please be sure to let your hygienist know. There are different options for people with dental anxiety such as nitrous oxide (i.e., laughing gas) or noise canceling headphones. Both your hygienist and your doctor will review their findings with you during your appointment and, if needed, give options for any future treatment that is recommended.
